Workloads

Medium and MediumNoFlash Workload

The medium workload is the only workload available in Login VSI Express and also available in Login VSI Pro. The medium workload is the default workload in Login VSI. MediumNoFlash is a workload based on the medium workload with only the Adobe Flash components disabled.

  • This workload simulates a medium knowledge working using Office, IE and PDF.
  • Once a session has been started the medium workload will repeat every 12 minutes.
  • During each loop the response time is measured every 2 minutes.
  • The medium workload opens up to 5 apps simultaneously.
  • The type rate is 160ms for each character.
  • Approximately 2 minutes of idle time is included to simulate real-world users.

Each loop will open and use:

  • Outlook 2007/2010, browse 10 messages.
  • Internet Explorer, one instance is left open (BBC.co.uk), one instance is browsed to Wired.com and Lonelyplanet.com.
  • Word 2007/2010, one instance to measure response time, one instance to review and edit document.
  • Bullzip PDF Printer & Acrobat Reader, the word document is printed and reviewed to PDF.
  • Excel 2007/2010, a very large randomized sheet is opened.
  • PowerPoint 2007/2010, a presentation is reviewed and edited.
  • 7-zip: using the command line version the output of the session is zipped.

Light Workload

The light workload runs fewer applications and closes them right after using them, this result in lower memory and CPU consumption.

  • This workload simulates a task worker.
  • The light workload is very light in comparison to medium.
  • Only 2 apps are open simultaneously.
  • Only apps used are IE, Word and Outlook.
  • Idle time total is about 1 minute and 45 seconds.

Heavy Workload

The heavy workload is higher on memory and cpu consumption because more applications are running in the background.

  • This workload simulates a power user.
  • This workload is based on the medium workload.
  • Difference in comparison to the medium workload:
    • Type rate is 130 ms per character.
    • Idle time total is only 40 seconds.
    • The heavy workload opens up to 8 apps simultaneously.

Multimedia Workload

  • This workload simulates a multimedia user.
  • This workload is based on the medium workload.
  • Differences in comparison to the medium workload:
    • A MP3 is started after visiting the websites. Once the mp3 is started and minimized the workload continues.
    • Instead of Excel a 20 second 720p WMV is started and viewed full-screen.
  • NOTE: this workload is considerably heavier on both target and client. Do not forget to scale down the amount of sessions per launcher.

Workload Mashup

If you want to combine the benefits of different workloads within one user test you can use workload mashup. When enabled all selected workloads will be executed by all users. To configure workload mashup use the steps below.

  • Start the Management Console and move to the “Test Configuration” tab. As workload select “Workload Mashup”.
  • At the Workload Mashup control configuration box you can add the workloads you want to execute.
  • Click the “Add workload” button.
  • Select the workload you want to use and click add.

Workload Core

Workload core is a completely empty workload. This workload will take care of logging on and logging off the users and running the custom scripts for each user. Please note that in this scenario the VSImax calculation is not executed during the test.

If you do want to run the core workload and still benefit from the VSImax calculation select workload Core + VSITimers. All the actions described on the analyzing results page (VSImax Dynamic) will then be executed within the workload.
