Virtual Desktop Performance Insights: Login PI (formerly Login VUM) Release Candidate available for immediate download

It’s a big day here at Login VSI. The Login PI Release Candidate is now available for download and evaluation. The beta product codenamed Login VUM is now officially named Login PI. In August this year we announced Login VUM beta at VMworld US. Today we’re announcing the product will officially be called Login PI because it delivers performance insights.

You can think of it as your own personal private investigator, quietly watching and providing you with insights into how your VDI/RDS environment (whether it is VMware Horizon View, Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp, Microsoft RDS) is performing.

I’ve given demos of the beta to hundreds of customers and the response has been consistent: everyone wants to know when they can get it. I’m happy to finally say that the answer is, “Today!” Your evaluation copy gives you a fully-functional version of the product free, including email and forum based support, for 45 days.

How will this product make my life easier?

Login PI gives you insight into what kind of performance your end users are currently experiencing in your virtual or remote desktop deployment. Set up Login PI to notify you when logins are taking longer than normal, or if users aren’t able to log in at all. It can let you know if your apps are taking longer than expected to launch. Do you normally have to wait until users call the help desk to find out there’s an issue? When users do call to complain that “it’s slow” how do you verify whether the user has a legitimate complaint? Login PI gives you that valuable information, helping you stay ahead of trouble tickets and deliver a better end user experience.

How does it work?

Login PI logs virtual users into your environment, on a schedule that you specify. The virtual users simulate real users, logging in and launching applications, but also timing how long those transactions take. When transactions take longer than expected, or if they don’t complete at all, Login PI generates an alert to tell you.

The product also generates reports to tell you about performance over time, giving you insights into the uptime of your system, and helping you spot performance trends. One of our beta customers was able to spot a trend where all performance slowed down at a certain time of day. They were able to identify that their backup process was causing the performance impact and rescheduled backups. Login PI showed that backups were impacting end user performance, providing IT with info to show how they could improve the end user experience.

What does Release Candidate mean, exactly?

Great question. There’s been so much enthusiasm and excitement for the product that we just couldn’t wait any longer to get it out to you. This is a feature complete build of the product. We’ve taken feedback from our first beta customers and implemented it in this release. It’s solid and stable and supported. This is your chance to give us any final feedback before we put the last coat of paint and polish on it. You can install it, kick the tires, and see what kind of performance insights into your VDI/RDS environment it provides.

Ok, so what’s next then?

Go to www.loginvsi.com/products/login-pi and click though to the demo registration form. Once you submit that, you’ll get an email with the download link where you can download the installer and setup guide. Then, start using the product and leverage the insights and notifications it can provide you about your environment. Along the way, give us your feedback on what you like, don’t like, and would like to see.

But mostly, start finding out about performance issues in your environment before your users do, leveraging the insights from Login PI.

Scalability testing Parallels Remote Application Server with Login VSI

Recently I went to VMworld in Barcelona where Login VSI had a booth on the expo... While I can’t remember exactly how many conversations I had - there had been so many that I lost my voice on day one. What was new this year is that quite a few people asked if our software is compatible with the solutions from Parallels specifically their Remote Application Server (RAS) (Datasheet). Windows 10 Default File Type Associations and Login VSI

When Login VSI 4.1 was released, the majority of desktops were running Windows 7 and life was easy. We’d set the default filetype for an application and it would simply work. The default and industry standard workloads in Login VSI include launching and using Adobe Reader as part of the virtual user simulation. Because Login VSI doesn’t always know which version of Adobe Reader is installed, or where it’s installed, the workload relies on the file type association (FTA) for .pdf documents to be… Continue Reading

Investigating Online Application Performance with Login PI

As many companies do, we use a CRM system. Recently, I have been getting complaints about our cloud CRM system, Microsoft Dynamics, being slow. I tried to investigate this by shadowing one of our users to see what was wrong. As expected, everything was fast. 15 minutes later, the same user reported slowness again. How could I investigate this without bothering the users? Continue Reading
