Significant Login VSI Update: What's New in 4.1

Significant Login VSI Update: What's New in 4.1

With each release of Login VSI, we strive to improve ease-of-use and reduce infrastructure requirements for testing. Today, we are excited to introduce you to Login VSI 4.1, a significant update that makes good on those promises. I'd like to walk you through some of the new features that make Login VSI an invaluable performance testing and validation solution for enterprises and vendors alike.

First and foremost, because Login VSI is used in production environments more and more, we have introduced 4 new workloads. We have added the Task, Office, Knowledge and Power user. These new workloads allow enterprises and vendors to choose the scenario that best matches the configuration of their environment---whether it’s a simple task worker, a desktop with one or two vCPUs or a full-scale power-user.

We are also introducing some great new features in the Login VSI Analyzer. For example, the possibility to overlay Hypervisor, Operating System and storage performance data like VMWare esxtop and Microsoft Windows Performance Monitor with VSImax to easily identify and understand the performance bottlenecks of individual components.

Let’s look at how that works. In the graph below, you see the results of two tests executed with Login VSI on a VDI environment running Windows 7 with Microsoft Office 2010. The horizontal axis shows the number of users and the vertical axis the user response time. In the first test, the VSImax is 148. In the second test where everything else is kept the same but the environment is running Office 2013, the VSImax drops to 112 users. That is about a 20% reduction in performance and if this were to happen in your production environment you could be in serious trouble.

Now let’s see what causes Login VSI to indicate that the VSImax is at a 112 users. During this test I have collected data from the hypervisor so let’s overlay this with the current test.

You can now clearly see that at 112 users, my system is utilizing a 100 percent CPU and is therefore slowing. Not as visibly evident, but very important: The way the VSImax is calculated has been updated to be more precise and allows workloads to run without Microsoft Office available within the desktop image.

For existing Login VSI customers, upgrading from any earlier version to 4.1 is as simple as 1-2-3. Running the upgrade wizard will execute all necessary steps automatically.

Be sure to download a trial to experience 4.1 yourself. I look forward to hearing what you think about the new features. If you have suggestions or comments for future versions let me know.
