Custom Workloads - Healthcare Industry Case Study - Login VSI Logo

As a Sales & Support Engineer here at Login VSI, I am constantly working with current and prospective customers, helping them apply our virtual user technology to solve their unique testing and desktop performance problems. I’m often asked whether the Login VSI and Login PI software can handle “custom workloads,” that is, application workloads that run different applications or tasks than those contained in the array of standard workloads we include with the product. The answer of course is yes!

Here’s a great example from a prospective Healthcare customer I worked with recently. Like many Healthcare companies, they were looking to deploy their electronic medical records application – in this case, Allscripts – within their VDI environment. While Allscripts is not yet included in our standard Login VSI workloads, it was a relatively simple task to set up a custom workload that would enable them to see the performance impact – and VSImax – of running their Allscripts application at scale.

Here’s what we did:

Challenge
Customer wanted to be able to test the impact of changes to their Allscripts EMR App (Login VSI), then measure the performance of the App in production (Login PI). This was to ensure there was no downtime/slow performance, so that patients were cared for effectively and efficiently. Higher availability and ultimately a better experience for the physicians will lead to a better experience for the patients, making the customer both more successful and more profitable.

Ultimately, due to the current IT landscape of everything being interconnected and fast/available, patients have a completely different standard to which their experience is based when interacting with your business in any facilities.

Solution
Within three days we built a workload script with their engineering staff to accomplish 6 Allscript test cases. This included:

  • Authentication
  • Patient Registration
  • Visit
  • Order/Cancel Prescription
  • Exit the Application

The script will go on to be run either based on creating load (Login VSI), and evaluating the impact of scale, login rate, changes and extended durations of execution. The workload will also be used to run on a continuous basis to create proactive alerts (Login PI) when function ceases or does not occur in standardized or expected fashion.

This functionality can also be now added to a Login VSI standard workload such as the Knowledge Worker, which would give you a full 360-degree view of your user experience.

Results
We proved that Login VSI and Login PI virtual users can perform as virtual stand-ins for their real users, enabling them to test any App changes at scale, measure App performance and spot & predict performance problems 24/7.

Do you need to know the performance impact of running line-of-business or legacy Apps within your VDI environment? Get in touch and let us know; if we don’t have a workload already, we can quickly set up a custom workload so our virtual users can give you the answers you need!
