Key VDI trends from Login VSI’s CEO
With 2014 now in the rear view mirror, I've been reflecting on VDI trends continuing into 2015 and the fundamentals of Login VSI. Jeroen van de Kamp (@thejeroen) and I started Login VSI back in 2012 with the purpose of making businesses more successful in desktop virtualization, specifically in their quest to improve the end user experience.
We have been true to that mission, even as the technology, vendors and business needs have evolved at a fast pace. Desktop virtualization has become even more critical to companies in their quest for resource flexibility and delivering great end user experiences. And Login VSI has also grown to meet these new challenges and opportunities, particularly in bringing the need for testing to the forefront of conversations in IT departments around the world.
In 2014 we saw big players like Amazon, VMware and Microsoft releasing DaaS offerings, and attempting to lower costs for enterprises with this new delivery model. Storage, once the biggest expense in a VDI solution, is forging a huge transformation with less SAN and more hybrid models. Storage costs are dropping while capacity and performance increase, all while transferring benefits to VDI. What we are seeing most of all is that VDI is transitioning from an emerging technology to an established one, and becoming the de facto solution for delivering Windows apps to mobile devices.
Looking into 2015, we will see these trends gain even more momentum. Login VSI expects more cloud and hosted adoption of VDI versus on premises deployments. Technology improvements will enable more workloads via VDI (for instance graphics intensive apps like CAD/CAM). In IT departments around the world, there will be less focus on proving the viability of VDI and more on improving the user experience.
Login VSI’s mission: help our customers be successful in VDI
And that’s where Login VSI comes in. As we look at these trends and how our customers are seizing opportunities in innovations, Login VSI recalls our mission is to help our customers be successful in VDI. When we launched Login VSI in 2012, we brought a unique perspective on performance. First off, we aimed to help enterprises size their VDI environments, so that resource investments could be aligned with actual performance needs. We provided the industry with common measurements for performance based on real-world users. And we introduced the concept of discipline in testing in VDI—a message we continue to drive forward.
As we look at where 2014 has taken us, we want to thank our customers for expanding this initial use case well beyond our original concept. Success in VDI is not just about cost-savings and efficiency: It is also about delivering a superb user experience and performance is central to this. Login VSI knows that end users don’t care about whether it’s Citrix XenApp or XenDesktop, Microsoft RDS or VMWare View running the hosted desktop environment: they want a rich and a responsive system and anytime, anywhere access. They simply expect IT to work. Predictably.
An important part of performance predictability is about being proactive—testing application updates, managing and measuring performance, by doing so getting ahead of trouble tickets. Earlier this month we introduced our second product, Login PI for Performance Insights as a Release Candidate. This product was born from the desire to provide the IT department with a way to measure and validate performance from the end user’s perspective. Login PI can be used standalone in production environments, but the full value of both products emerges when they are used in combination. Login VSI to set up and test with Login PI to measure those results when the desktops are in production, with simulated users giving alerts to IT so that real users have great performance.
Seizing the DaaS trend
The trend of DaaS is important for VDI because it helps lower costs further and move VDI to an Opex budget. As this delivery model gains foothold, Login VSI is there to service providers set up their hosted environment based on industry standard workloads. Login PI is used to test and monitor performance on both the enterprise and service provider side. Using Login PI helps service provides make sure they are delivering to their SLAs and also allows the customer the chance to test performance with their in the move to hosted environments. We want to help IT experience the benefits of performance predictability.
Login VSI Graphics Framework
Login VSI is enabling the trend of extending VDI to more industries, such as large manufacturing, architecture, industrial engineering, entertainment and creative industries and to incorporating graphics-heavy users in enterprises where VDI already has good momentum. For the IT department, bring GPUs into the VDI environment introduces performance unknowns. This year we introduced the Login VSI Graphics Framework. It is a customizable graphical testing framework which can use any graphical application with different visualization modes, models and frame rate requirements. We see this helping new enterprises benefit from VDI and existing enterprises extend the benefits to a new set of users.
Login VSI Storage Workload
We introduced a lot this year so, finally, with software-defined storage speeding the viability and cost-effectiveness of VDI, we wanted to help storage vendors with a common storage workload so that they could validate their architectures and compare capacity based on shared measurements. We think the Login VSI Storage Workload ultimately benefits end users by allowing apples-to-apples comparisons—especially important when considering new technologies.

In the end, Login VSI is about staying ahead of trends and developing great products to help our customers be successful in VDI. With performance at the heart of user experience, we want to equip IT departments with the knowledge and tools they need to get the most out of VDI. IT is often a competitive advantage and VDI in particular because of cost-savings and employee productivity. We see our part in helping our customers go about delivering business with great success.
