Delivering a Virtual Digital Workplace Platform with Login VSI

Guest blog by Paul Bray, Chief Technologist – Workplace & Mobile at Computacenter

Desktop Virtualisation technologies are a key part of the modern Digital Workplace, and a fundamental part of our solutions at Computacenter. We support over a hundred thousand users of Virtualised Desktop technologies across our Global customer base.

Desktop Virtualisation review

As part of our continuing strategy, we undertook a “review” of our Desktop Virtualisation offerings in late 2015, starting with the platforms and infrastructures that underpin these workloads. As technology has matured and developed, technologies such as all Flash arrays, and hyper converged platforms have emerged from a number of vendors, and represent a significant opportunity for us to potentially re-shape our solutions.

As part of this we needed a robust method of evaluating multiple different platforms in a systematic and consistent manner. We chose Login VSI as it is the best of breed and met all of our requirements, in summary these were:

  • Compatibility with our chosen software platforms, primarily Citrix and VMware
  • Providing end to end test capability for both compute and storage components
  • Well defined metrics and baselines that our partners and our customers would immediately understand.

We partnered together to address one key aim - How can we best exploit these new technologies to deliver the best Virtual Desktop user experience possible?

Global Solution Centre

Testing technology is not new to Computacenter, we leveraged our multi-million pound facility at Hatfield which is part of our Global Solution Centre capability and worked with a number of key partners including HPE, VCE, Dell, Citrix, VMware (amongst others!) to deploy various kinds of technology infrastructures that we could test against. We then used Login VSI to perform systematic load testing on each platform, with the aim of ascertaining the scale and performance that each could offer.

The process took place over a 4 month period. Some of the results were quite surprising. If you’d like to learn more about the process we went through you can take a look at our infographic here.

With great support from Login VSI we have now updated our Virtual Desktop proposition with what we know to be the best platforms within the marketplace, giving ourselves and our customers’ greater assurance of the performance and experience that users will receive when we deploy these technologies in the future.

Scalability testing Parallels Remote Application Server with Login VSI

Recently I went to VMworld in Barcelona where Login VSI had a booth on the expo... While I can’t remember exactly how many conversations I had - there had been so many that I lost my voice on day one. What was new this year is that quite a few people asked if our software is compatible with the solutions from Parallels specifically their Remote Application Server (RAS) (Datasheet). Windows 10 Default File Type Associations and Login VSI

When Login VSI 4.1 was released, the majority of desktops were running Windows 7 and life was easy. We’d set the default filetype for an application and it would simply work. The default and industry standard workloads in Login VSI include launching and using Adobe Reader as part of the virtual user simulation. Because Login VSI doesn’t always know which version of Adobe Reader is installed, or where it’s installed, the workload relies on the file type association (FTA) for .pdf documents to be… Continue Reading

Investigating Online Application Performance with Login PI

As many companies do, we use a CRM system. Recently, I have been getting complaints about our cloud CRM system, Microsoft Dynamics, being slow. I tried to investigate this by shadowing one of our users to see what was wrong. As expected, everything was fast. 15 minutes later, the same user reported slowness again. How could I investigate this without bothering the users? Continue Reading
