Notes from the Citrix Synergy 2017 Solution Expo

Performance starts here

We’ve been back from Citrix Synergy 2017 for a week now – and for the fifth year in a row, it was a great experience for us here at Login VSI. There have been plenty of recap articles about the event, but before too much time passed, we wanted to give you a quick view of Citrix Synergy from a vendor’s perspective on the exhibit hall floor.

“Performance starts here.” That was our theme this year at Citrix Synergy 2017, and we saw a lot of interest especially in the latest release of the Login PI 2.0 software for digital workplace performance management. We announced Login PI 2.0 at the show, and my colleague Adam Carter gave a great synopsis of the new release in this space already. As Gartner Research said in a recent report, a good end user experience is the ultimate predictor of success in a VDI implementation, and having Login PI’s virtual users measure and record end user desktop performance data, to help you spot and predict problems before end users notice, just makes sense. It was gratifying that both visitors to our booth and the judges of the Best of Citrix Synergy 2017 awards seemed to get it!

There was a lot of buzz in the Citrix Synergy Solution Expo about the results of the VDI Like a Pro “State of the VDI/SBC Union” survey, which were also announced at the show. Ruben Spruijt from Atlantis Computing and our own Mark Plettenberg did a fantastic job conducting the survey, and the results are packed full of insights and trends about the VDI industry. If you haven’t checked out the results whitepaper, get your hands on a copy, and register for the Survey Results webinar. Or, check out an independent review of the survey results here.

We only exhibit at a few big events like Citrix Synergy every year, and they are important to us here at Login VSI because they give us a chance to connect in person with lots of customers, prospects, vendors, and partners all at once, in an informal setting. Of course, we’re regularly communicating with these folks remotely, but there’s no substitute for good old-fashioned face-to-face time -in this case over one of our freshly-made stroopwafels! - and it’s where we often get the best, most candid feedback.

For example, I spoke with a network admin from a major Blue Cross Blue Shield healthcare organization who told us how they literally do not deploy a change to their VDI environment until they test it with run Login VSI’s virtual users. End user performance is important in any organization, but especially so in a healthcare VDI environment. Login VSI gives that BCBS org an exact picture of the performance impact of the changes they are making, and confidence that end user performance won’t suffer once they deploy the changes to production.

We also heard from attendees asking how they can feed Login PI’s virtual user performance data to IT management tools like Microsoft System Center Operation Manager (SCOM) and SolarWinds. Login PI has a great dashboard for viewing performance trends about logon times, network latency, application performance information and many other measurements. But we recognize that system admins don’t necessarily want to have to view yet another dashboard. Which is why Login PI includes a secure API to feed data to the Windows event logs. From there, it can be consumed by IT management and monitoring tools like SCOM and SolarWinds, and analytic engines like Splunk, providing them the end user’s perspective on desktop performance.

Many of our customers, prospects, and partners who visited our booth mentioned the need for our virtual users to be able to test multimedia workloads. Multimedia applications and content are obviously in wide use in most organizations, and there’s clearly a need for virtual users to run multimedia workloads and assess their performance impact on a virtualized desktop infrastructure. We’ve heard this loud and clear and we’ve listened - watch this space for more information soon about that!

We received a lot of additional feedback at the event. We hear it, and it will inform and influence our product roadmap. So, those are some of our highlights and takeaways from the Citrix Synergy 2017 Solution Expo. If you’re seeking additional insight into the conference sessions, I would direct you to the very informative podcast by Gabe Knuth at BrianMadden.com – Gabe did a great recap of the conference and I recommend you give it a listen. Meanwhile, here's a quick video we compiled full of images from the show:

What were some of your highlights from Citrix Synergy 2017 (besides our fresh, hot, stroopwafels ;)? Is Citrix becoming a security company, as they said in one of the main keynote sessions? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
