Simulate different behaviors of various users during a VDI performance test with Workload Mashup

Everyone is unique and not everybody is using their desktop the same way as you do. As an IT engineer I have multiple screens open with several applications such as our support tool, an RDP client, Outlook and my browser. My sales colleagues are continuously talking on the phone and are not always interacting with their computer, and when they do, it’s usually just Outlook and our CRM. The marketing team, if—and that’s a big IF--they are working at all*, is also using different applications than I do, for example Adobe Creative Suite, a marketing automation tool and our CRM.

My point is that every type of employee is different. For that reason every type of employee is generating a different load on the centralized desktop environment. The fact that there are so many different users makes it challenging to scale the environment and offer enough resources for every type of user. To make sure that there is enough capacity, we should take these differences into consideration when load testing any given virtualized desktop environment.

Default Login VSI workloads

Login VSI created four default workloads, each representing a type of user that generates a distinctive load on your environment. You can use these workloads out-of-the-box with the most common enterprise applications such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet Explorer. These workloads give you the ability to easily test your environment with different kind of users. Read this blog for a detailed explanation of Login VSI's default workloads.

Login VSI offers four out-of-the-box workloads to simulate different types of users

Login VSI Workload Mashup

If you have different types of users on your virtualized desktop environment (like most of us do), you also want your simulated users to act differently during your load tests as well. This will give you a better and more realistic insight into the maximum capacity of your virtualized desktop environment. To help you with this, Login VSI has built a feature called Workload Mashup. This gives you the ability to test with different types of users during the same test. For example, you can simulate 25% task workers, 25% office workers and 50% knowledge workers.

Configuring Workload Mashup

Open the Login VSI Management Console and click in the left sidebar on “Scenario”. Selecting “Workload Mashup” from the dropdown menu gives you the ability to add (by pressing the +) every default workload and your custom workloads.

If we want a 2000 user test to represent the example I gave before (25% task workers, 25% office workers and 50% knowledge workers), we will have to add the number of workloads based on the shared denominator. In the case of our example the common denominator is 4 so we will need to add our workloads like this:

  • 1/4 task workers
  • 1/4 office workers
  • 2/4 knowledge workers

It’s that easy. You are now able to start a test with different types of users that will generate different loads during the same test. This will give you even more insights in the maximum capacity of your virtualized desktop environment.
