Customize VDI workloads the easy way: Introducing Login VSI Workload Editor Beta
Setting up centralized virtualized desktop environments is challenging, to say the least. With so many components to configure for resiliency and optimum performance, it is hard to know when you’ve set up everything just right. Login VSI’s virtual users provide insight into VDI complexity. Virtual users will try the system out, at scale, and help identify where the environment can be improved. But sometimes the workloads of virtual users need further customization from what we provide out of the box, so to speak. Today, we’ve made a big step to make this customization easier for our customers.
If you are familiar with the Login VSI virtual user concept, then you may know that these virtual users are programmed to behave like real users, on real desktops, using real applications. This programming is what we call workloads, and these workloads are scripts. Scripts are like what an actor would use to rehearse a scene, but the language used within them takes some time to understand and to code. For many of our customers this is not an issue as they will use the preconfigured workloads that come with the product, like the Task, Knowledge, Power and Office Workers. You can even mix and match these workloads with our Workload Mashup.
But if you are like many of our new enterprise customers, you are probably wondering how these scripts can be further modified to use your specific business applications and policies.
The Workload Editor, currently in beta, makes workload customization much easier, by eliminating the need to understand the scripting language.
Introducing the Login VSI Workload Editor beta
The Workload Editor is a graphical user interface that allows the user to open, modify and save workload scripts. Let me provide you with an example that helps illustrate how our customers use this new feature. The other day I was talking with the systems engineer at a very large enterprise insurance provider. While he was very technical, he was not familiar with the workload scripting language and was hesitant to modify the workloads directly.

He simply wanted to run a Windows Registry edit to control the desktop environment, for example, a modification to the Microsoft Excel application window to be fully maximized before the workload executed. Not something you’d want to do with an Active Directory Group Policy, but very easy to do with a Registry edit.
To do this all he had to do was grab the registry action “write registry value” from the Workload Editor menu and drag it to the operating system modification segment, which we call the Preparation Phase. After doing that we just entered the information that was gathered from Microsoft’s support site, saved the workload as a new name and that’s it.
