Supporting Disaster Recovery with Login VSI

To protect and maintain business continuity is key for any organization. To cope with all (IT related) changes that may impact application availability and therefore disturb business operations, most large organizations have implemented comprehensive and structured change management programs. Programs including pre- and post-testing planned changes with realistic user numbers, and pro-active detection of slowdown caused by unplanned changes or gradual deterioration.

Next to handling change, which is a fact of life in any IT environment, organizations also have to prepare for the unexpected. For this reason large organizations spend much time and money to ensure that their IT infrastructure will survive any (natural or human-caused) disaster. This activity is most commonly referred to as Disaster Recovery (DR) planning.

How to keep your VDI environments safe from harm

Login VSI for Load Testing is very well suited to test the type of scenario’s that are not very typical, but nonetheless are very valid and necessary to prepare for. Login VSI supports large organizations, looking to safeguard business continuity through DR planning, in different ways:

  • Login VSI is typically used in VDI-related IT Infrastructures to execute and test different disaster scenarios, such as: will it still work if there is a 100% HQ outage and all 20,000 staff try to connect to their applications from remote locations, will the system hold if, after a power failure, 10,000 users log-on in a few minutes time, and will the 2nd system hold the extra numbers if we must move all users from the 1st system because of an unexpected total stand-still.
  • Login VSI is also used to regularly test the health of the “cold site” environment when this is maintained for DR scenarios. Regular DR tests may be required by regulations and must be documented on audit forms. Customers use Login VSI for Load Testing in these regular (often quarterly) tests to put genuine stress on the DR environment, and at the same time, measure end user experience in various remote locations using Login PI for Active Monitoring.

Large organizations benefit from Login VSI for two reasons:

  1. Save costs of testing: testing with Login VSI can be almost completely automated and therefore significantly reduce the human resource cost they would otherwise involve.
  2. Protect business continuity: as testing with Login VSI is both at scale and consistent for each test, organizations can be much more condifent in their readiness should a DR event occur.
