Automating your XenDesktop/XenApp deployment: Everything you need to know about the Delivery Controller

Automating your XenDesktop/XenApp deployment: Everything you need to know about the Delivery Controller

Our community is constantly growing. One of the great things about that is the fact that you get to talk to a lot of different people. After a while you start noticing certain trends. One thing I recently noticed is that there is a lot of confusion when it comes to deploying a virtualized desktop environment. So, I think it’s time to get technical and clarify a few important things you need to know when, for example, automating a Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp environment. There are many pieces involved in deploying Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp for your company. For simplification purposes while discussing automation, let’s focus on a single feature of a Citrix deployment- the Delivery Controller.

Login AM makes Image Management easy

Login AM makes Image Management easy

Login AM was always a tool that focused on what we usually call "the inside of a virtual machine". It fully enables you to execute any changes on a machine but it always needed help from additional tooling to deploy the operating system. Now with the new Image Management feature we have the first feature that provides integration with a hypervisor to deploy and configure the virtual machine from start to end.

The real challenges of Image Management

The real challenges of Image Management

Remember Ghost?

Imaging technologies date back to the nineties. Software called Ghost was used to create bit-by-bit copies of hard disk content from one computer to the next in a process called cloning. Cloning allowed for rapid enrolment of new computers in an organization. It worked beautifully and saved lots of time as long as source and target computers were identical.

Usage Reporting for DaaS providers with Login AM

Usage Reporting for DaaS providers with Login AM

When I talk to our Managed Service Provider customers I’m happy to hear that Login AM really helps them with their day-to-day challenges. But why are they using Login AM? There are a few benefits they all seem to agree on. Login AM automates the deployment of all applications running on Windows. In most cases this results in less manual work and an OPEX reduction of 30 – 50%. Login AM also enables an easy and rapid onboarding of new customers and automates repetitive virtual desktop and application management tasks. Other customers are very pleased with the fact that an important component of the software are the Login AM Blueprints that, amongst other things, reduce the need for (re)packaging of software (up to 80%). But there is always room for improvement.

Dynamic Packaging - No More Need for Repackaging with Login AM

Dynamic Packaging - No More Need for Repackaging with Login AM

Why send your application packages through a lengthy packaging process to customize them when you can tailor them yourself quickly on the spot? Software packaging for electronic distribution is a well-established practice in many organizations. No matter if applications are packaged using MSI or virtualized using Microsoft App-V or VMware ThinApp, nobody really seems to stop and think about the necessity of it all. Many do not realize that packaging is one of the most expensive and time consuming parts of an application and desktop lifecycle.

Reducing VDI complexity with HP Moonshot and Login AM

Reducing VDI complexity with HP Moonshot and Login AM

In the past few years, there have been many innovations in the system and application virtualization arena. Even though these innovations solve many of the daily application management challenges in the data center, they also introduced new and costly ones. The HP Moonshot system is a refreshingly simple concept. Small dedicated computer cartridges provide computing power from the data center to end users in a one-to-one relation. Each computer cartridge packs their own CPU, graphics card, networking and storage to deliver an optimal end-user experience.

Quickly deploy virtual desktop environments with Automation Machine blueprints

Quickly deploy virtual desktop environments with Automation Machine blueprints

A typical day for me at the Login VSI office consists of some geek time for trying new technology or playing with our own products to test new functionality or compatibility. As our market is centered on Microsoft, VMware and Citrix I always have an RDS, XenApp, XenDesktop and VMware Horizon View environment standing by for whatever experiments come to mind. Oh yeah, and I regularly break stuff too.
