A hidden gem for Login VSI workload customization: Problem Steps Recorder in Windows

Every now and then you run into some very useful tools on the Internet, but sometimes you even manage to find a hidden gem somewhere within the operating system you have been using for so many years. Today I would like to introduce (or re-introduce) you to such a tool: Problem Steps Recorder. Problem Steps Recorder is helpful in all those situations where a user has to explain to you what they are actually doing. Instead of trying to repeat the process with these (typically) vague descriptions, Problem Steps Recorder will take screenshots and notes of every step in the process.

Most of the time, Problem Steps Recorder is used as a troubleshooting tool by support teams. By recording all the steps someone performed before they received an error notification, a support team should get enough info to reproduce (and hopefully solve) the issue.

How to use it for Login VSI?

We receive a lot of requests from our customers to customize workloads for them. We know exactly how to add custom applications to the Login VSI workloads, but what specific actions are required in the application? Does the customer want us to open the app and close it again? Or open a file and add some new data? In every application, there are many different actions to execute.

Problem Steps Recorder helps me capture input for Login VSI workloads. Before I customize a workload for a customer, I ask an application owner what steps he or she would like to see automated in their application during the stress tests of their virtualized desktop environment. I then let them click through these actions with Problem Steps Recorder enabled. This gives me a detailed overview of the tasks that need to be added to the virtual user’s workload.

If you are planning to customize workloads, you can also use this simple tool. Before you create or customize a workload, record the entire process. This will give you a good step-by-step overview of all the custom actions you will need to create in the workload editor before you get started. Easy right?

So where can I find this tool? Just run “PSR.exe” and as you can see it’s still available in Windows 10 :-)

windows problem steps recorder psr.exe

windows problem steps recorder start record

The tool itself is really easy to operate, just hit “Start Record” and you are ready to go. The output is saved directly to a .ZIP file so it’s easy to distribute without further actions required by the user. Below are some examples of Problem Steps Recorder output:

I hope you found this "hidden gem" a useful tool for customizing Login VSI workloads. Let me know if it helps: @MarkPlettenberg.
