Three Lesser Known Tips for Your VDI Performance Tests (Login VSI Tips & Tricks)

Two weeks ago I received an email from a customer asking if the colors in Login VSI graphs could be changed after analyzing a test. The customer mentioned that the colors don’t have enough contrast which makes it difficult to clearly distinguish the lines in the graphs. After asking our development team to implement this valuable customer feedback, it was immediately apparent that this functionality was actually already available in the Analyzer! That’s a quick way to deliver new functionality to our customers.

Based on that experience of uncovering functionality even I didn’t know we had, today I’m sharing some Login VSI tips and tricks with you that are not very well known, but that can be extremely useful.

Changing colors in graphs

As mentioned, it’s sometimes useful to be able to change the colors after doing a comparison in the Login VSI Analyzer. In the image below you can clearly see that the Analyzer provides a lot of information but it’s difficult to see which color corresponds to which specific line.

It’s actually quite easy to solve this. Simply double click any color in the selection window at the bottom right of the Analyzer and pick your favorite color. Any RGB color is supported so you can create beautiful Login VSI charts with a personal touch to add some flair and express yourself :-)

Automatically increment test names

If you are executing a lot of performance tests there are a couple of things you can do to make your job easier. One of them is full test automation but that’s a bit more involved and I won’t dive in here. But, if you execute a lot of different tests (like we do), it can be difficult to find the chronological order of the tests so that you can compare the changes in the different tests. Today I want to show you how you can make starting a test a bit more light touch by using the {increment} parameter when starting a test. It’s as easy as 1-2-3.

In the start test wizard you can just add the {increment} parameter anywhere within your test name and it will automatically resolve to a number starting with 1 and auto incrementing for each consecutive test. By using this parameter the start test wizard will also remember the name of your test for the next run.

Editing workloads

You want to change the out of the box workloads or want to create completely new ones but you have no scripting or programming powers? No problem. Use the new Login VSI Workload Editor (beta) to fulfill your needs. This editor allows you to do all of this in a visual way by simply dragging and dropping items and actions around exactly where you want them. The Workload Editor is available for free and shipped with Login VSI by default. Simply choose Edit workload from the Management Console to start.
