VDI Like a PRO - Survey Results, 2019

At the end of January 2019, we held our first VDI Performance Summit in Amsterdam.

It was a great day with almost 250 attendees and loads of interesting topics on stage. There was a lot of interest from all over the world.

Unfortunately not everyone could attend in-person, so now we’re organizing a VIRTUAL VDI Performance Summit, on the 2nd of May: learn more and register (for free) HERE.

VDI Like a Pro - Survey Results

To build out content for this event team VDI Like a Pro has surveyed more than 200 people from 30 different countries. Approximately 35% of respondents were from the Netherlands and 27% from the United States.

It's great to see that a large number of the respondents implement some sort of performance tuning. This shows that out-of-the-box virtual desktop performance leaves a lot to be desired. This should not come as a surprise, knowing that operating systems (such as Windows 10) have been designed to run on any device (including consumers'), with a lot of services that might not be necessary in the virtual desktop e.g. the XBOX gaming service or WLAN.

The most popular performance tuning tools out there currently are VMware’s Operating System Optimization Toolkit (OSOT) and the Citrix Optimizer (CTXO). A special note for BIS-F this framework helps you seal your base image including optimizations for Windows, Anti-Virus, Virtualization and Monitoring, in the process it can also call VMware or/and the Citrix optimizer.

We also note that there’s a shift to the cloud happening. While 52% of the respondents are at a firm No, the others are trying to go there or already in production. Performance however just like on-premises remains a challenge. These are just a few examples of performance influencers.

  1. Untuned systems with anti-virus and other services that drain performance
  2. Your cloud provider might be changing the platform without informing you (e.g. patching for Meltdown & Spectre)
  3. Your cloud provider might be overcommitting hardware resources
  4. Your multi-user instances are not “big” enough
  5. Bad applications

Applications are typically at the core of your business, if your most critical apps don’t work it gets expensive real fast. A major problem with applications is that you must support them as-is, it is not very common for software companies to work together with customers to improve performance (for multi-user systems). A thing I encounter often is that although traditional monitoring shows all green (CPU, Memory, IOPS) real users are still complaining, its therefore imperative to measure this user experience continuously.
