Enterprises (and Empires) with virtualized desktop environments are increasingly interested in moving parts of their environments to service providers to gain more flexibility and lower the cost of change. User experience and performance will always be critical to IT departments, and Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) providers are tapping into this growing need with a way to prove they can deliver the SLAs that both sides agreed to. Whether you’re Empire or Rebel, First Order or Resistance, when user experience and performance matter the most, DaaS providers turn to tools to ensure that standards are met.
The interest in DaaS
There is a great disturbance in the Force, interest in DaaS is steadily increasing. Adoption is approximately 5 percent today, and Gartner found that by 2019, half of all VDI environments will exist in the cloud and be supported by DaaS vendors. More to the point, businesses in all sectors, from scoundrels and smugglers to Alderaan Royalty, from federal governments to health care, are beginning to turn to hosted VDI as a means of achieving mobility and improving productivity. The DaaS market is about to get very competitive.
A competitive market
While Jedi Masters abound in the cloud service space, the DaaS sector is largely still Padawan learners, since those offering DaaS solutions haven’t completely worked out their portfolios yet or made a mark in the industry. MarketsandMarkets forecast the DaaS market value at $9.41 billion by 2019. That’s a number that even a Hutt would pay attention to.
We believe that there is pent up demand from enterprises to move to DaaS. The key to tapping a larger share of that demand is providing superior services and proof of supporting user performance.
When it comes to user experience, service levels need to be guaranteed. Both providers and customers need demonstrable proof that service level agreements are accurate when it comes to high performance and availability.
Keeping DaaS in check with SLAs
Like the Jedi Academy, Enterprises should have higher than normal standards for DaaS environments, as they will play a large role in mobility strategies for years. Not only should they demand scalability, availability and high performance, but businesses will also want the best DaaS solutions that their budgets can afford.
But, how can DaaS customers ensure that SLAs are even being met? Via the same measurements that the DaaS providers are using, but installed on the enterprise side. Enterprises need a way to automatically and regularly measure user experience provided by their DaaS services. This way, IT administrators can generate reports for business leaders, allowing everyone to have insight into the performance of their DaaS solutions.
A virtual user for SLA enforcement
DaaS providers and DaaS customers need to take advantage of automation to guarantee that the high performance, low latency and always-on availability metrics outlined in SLAs are adhered to with minimal effort on their part. The best way to do so is with a virtual end user: a bot that can experience what the typical employee will when accessing a cloud-based desktop.
A virtual user (or better yet, a droid) doesn’t care what dashboards say or reports churn out, but instead, it explains what is happening for real users. It understands the average end user experience when it comes to latency and performance, and if DaaS environments are ever unavailable, these automated tools will inform administrators. In other words, it will tell service providers and their customers when SLAs are met – and when they are not.

Not yet another monitoring tool
Login PI is not a monitoring tool, a DaaS console or a performance dashboard. And better yet, Login PI functions alongside existing monitoring tools, without impacting the environment.
That’s because a monitoring tool doesn’t set apart one DaaS provider from another, nor does it ensure that both sides are meeting SL As on an end-user level. But Login PI does, without any end users noticing that it exists.

Having been a key player in the VDI and SBC markets, we understand that the DaaS market might be immature, but we are confident that it will grow once providers and clients are able to accurately demonstrate that their environments are up to whose standards.
More importantly, we believe that until DaaS providers and customers are able to prove that SLAs are fulfilled at all times, companies will be hesitant to host their desktop infrastructure in the cloud. DaaS can replace traditional computing, but only if performance is measurably equal.
