Login AM Package Generator for MSIs with Media Import

Login AM Package Generator for MSIs with Media Import

At Login AM we use a concept called 'Application Centric'. With this we mean that everything that belongs to the application is created more or less during application installation and it is always linked to the application package.

The main tasks are:

  • Installation
  • Active Directory Group Management
  • Startmenu Shortcuts and Published Applications

A lot of application installation packages are already MSI. Thus the installation part is mostly not that difficult anymore. It is more bringing the application in each test step alive, meaning also managing the other two parts. But to be able to do that you need to define these parts in Login AM. The Login AM Package Generator is taking care of these steps, transforming an MSI with nearly no manual interaction into an Login AM Package.

Its configuration is based on the shortcuts that are created during installing the Plugin for Security and Shortcuts and assigns the media to the package. This removes the burden of configuring all these things manually, preventing typos during configuration and reducing the time to run through the testing process for new applications that are based on MSI dramatically.

The tool queries all MSIs in a folder and generates a separate package for each MSI. The package is named like the folder where the MSI is stored. The tool should be run on a packaging machine because it will install the MSI.
