Login PI 1.0 now available: New features added

It’s a big day for VDI today: Login PI 1.0 is available now and you can download the latest version today. As your friendly development lead on Login PI, I can’t wait to get into the details of what’s new since the Release Candidate in December.

But first, on behalf of the entire product team, I extend a big thank you to our customers and members of our community who contributed feedback, much of which is now part of the product. Login PI is the best way to measure the user experience of your VDI environment. More than just measuring performance counters, Login PI reports on how the environment is really performing – how long does it take to log in, and what’s the response time of apps.

For those of you evaluating Login PI, today we are introducing a hands-on lab that gives you the opportunity to experience Login PI without configuring the product to your environment. We’ve worked hard on this lab, so I hope you find it valuable. In addition, we have some new support documentation to accompany version 1.0.

And now, I’m pleased to introduce what’s new.

Improved Setup

One of the biggest changes from the Release Candidate to version 1.0 we made was to completely redo the Login PI setup. In the RC version, this was a custom-made setup executable. We changed the setup to a MSI-based installer which is more common, and also has advantages for automatic deployments.

Better Usability

Delivering a highly usable product was at the top of our list. Centralized desktop environments can be very complex, so as we considered our customers’ needs we knew that easy integration was key. Therefore, we separated the installation process from the configuration process within Login PI. The installer installs the executables so that Login PI can be started. The first time the Login PI console is launched it will prepare the basic configuration. The creation of the database for Login PI is part of this configuration process.

Connection command line

When creating a profile within Login PI, a connection type needs to be selected. Based on the selected connector the configuration form is created. This form includes the minimal required parameters for the connector to launch a session. In some scenarios, additional parameters may be needed, so we have created the ability to edit the connection command line.

Legal notices

It is common in large enterprises for the desktop to display some form of legal notice prior to allowing login. The desktop user needs to agree to terms in order to start working. This requirement on the user causes an automated tool like Login PI to get stuck. We created a solution to circumvent this issue, allowing Login PI to be used in enterprises on production desktops. When the legal notice is enabled, the Login PI launcher watches for the legal notice to appear and accepts it before supplying login details for the desktop.

Improved job scheduling

We applied some changes to job creation as well. For example, we separated the date and time so these can be configured independently. This way, the schedules can be more specific and can include exclusion conditions when tests won’t run, allowing for maintenance or reboot periods to occur without generating outage alerts in Login PI.

Custom Timers

Login PI now has the ability to script interaction with an app and report the time it takes to complete. This could be used to supply credentials to an app that has a login, or perform a query or other actions within an app to measure the performance. With the custom timer you have the ability to configure measurements point within the workload to start collect default actions. This allows Login PI to measure basic app performance metrics as users would experience them.

When applications become slower you want to get notified. Within the RC we already had an automatic threshold mechanism based on the median of the results. But when you have a service level agreement for the availability and start times of applications to be monitored by Login PI, you may want to set this threshold to a custom time. In Login PI 1.0, you can configure fixed thresholds and the default percentage for the automatic thresholds.
