Workload Recording with Login PI
I love the flexibility of the virtual user, it can handle any application and can go as deep into the application as you like.
This does of course mean the desire to customize workloads to include, for example, your CRM, an Electronic health record or Finance application, increases.
How to add applications with Login PI
Today I’d like to show you how easy it is to add an application to Login PI and have the virtual user operate it as a real person would by starting the application, clicking elements and typing.
How to identify the right application for testing
As applications are the biggest cause of performance complaints (Source: VDILikeAPro survey January 2019), the first step is to identify the application we’d like to use and the path the virtual user is going to follow, as you can imagine the workload will look different for a nurse, doctor and finance employee. To best capture what real users do I typically check in with application owners or end-users themselves to see what their application usage looks like. In this example the path looks like this:
- Start the application
- Load a document
- Add / Edit data
- Look at a report
- Close the application
I’ve already added the application to Login PI, and I’ve also downloaded the Login VSI scripting toolset. And if you have not done so please check the links or this blogpost by Ferry Stelte on adding custom applications.
Application X-Ray – free for every Login PI customer
Here at Login VSI, we love a good performance and we know our customers do, too. So to help our Login PI customers improve their performance, we’ve included Application X-Ray with every Login PI installation, for free! Application X-Ray is a fantastic tool. Here’s how it works:
- Start the application you’d like to automate
- Start the Login PI Application X-Ray
- Identify the button/element you’d like to operate
- Drag the crosshairs on top of that button
The X-Ray now allows you to pick an action to execute against that element including:
- Right click
- Double click
All that is left now is to copy the generated line of code to your application script. Below you can find an example of an application popup with a button, and how to record the commands that are required to continue in to the application. Within the application simply repeat these steps and go anywhere you want.
