The Challenge Posed by Browsing & Online Advertising

Over the last 10 years there have been several factors that have gradually contributed to the web browser having a much greater impact on VDI and RDS systems. Those factors include the following:

  • Tabbed Browsing: Being able to have multiple tabs open in single a browser window was first introduced to Internet Explorer in version 7 (IE7), which was released in late 2006. However, most enterprises running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 stayed with IE6 for application compatibility reasons. It wasn’t until Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 were released in late 2009 shipping with Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) that most VDI and RDS environments began to support tabbed browsing
  • Richer Content: Web content has become much heavier from a memory and processing perspective. Whether it be Adobe Flash or HTML5, the web browser has evolved from something that serves mostly static content to something that now delivers rich interactive application content and video.
  • SaaS Applications: Adoption of cloud services and SaaS applications has been growing exponentially. The web browser is now the primary application that many enterprises use for business critical SaaS applications such as CRM, Time Tracking, Expense Management, HR, Email, File Sharing, etc. This means that users are spending more time using a web browser on the Internet as their primary application.
  • Multiple Monitors: In many organizations, the majority of users now have multiple monitors. At first glance multiple monitors doesn’t seem like it would directly affect web browsing; however, it has changed user behavior and workflows. Users have grown accustomed to opening multiple web tabs and placing a browser with dynamic content on their secondary monitor while they work in their key business applications on the primary monitor. This browser on the secondary monitor is often displaying a news, sports, or social media site. Displaying dynamic content on the secondary monitor, this browser will often sit there for sometimes hours rendering content and using resources without the user ever making it the active window again.

Prior to 2008, the most popular web browser for RDS was still the single tab Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). SaaS applications were rare and Internet usage was typically limited to research, travel, ecommerce or casual web browsing. Most websites served static images and text and tried to limit bandwidth consumed. Use of video on the Internet was not ubiquitous and when video was used it was often limited to streams of 512 Kbps or resolutions of 360p. In late 2010 enterprises began the migration to Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 in greater numbers, Internet content become richer, and the browser quickly began its ascent as the most critical and resource hungry application.

All of the items mentioned above have contributed significantly to the web browser consuming a larger amount of resources; however, there is one additional item that has also had a major impact, web advertising. With users spending more and more time in their web browsers on the Internet, the global advertising market took notice and has been increasing their spend, targeting people through web advertising. This obviously has implications on your VDI performance and it is quite easy to see how 100+ users on a VDI or RDS server all browsing sites like this will have a measurable impact: for example, a single IE tab has a working memory set of over 300MB and committed memory over 272 MB!
