Hydra for Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid on Hyper-V Reaches General Availability

Earlier this year, we announced the private preview of Hydra’s support for Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) Hybrid on Hyper-V with a simple goal: help organizations simplify day-two operations as they adopt Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid while continuing to leverage their existing infrastructure investments.

From Private Preview to General Availability

Since then, we’ve worked closely with customers and partners participating in the private preview to validate real-world deployments and refine the experience based on their feedback. With the release of Hydra v2.8.0 we’re excited to make Hyper-V support for Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid generally available starting today.

One Console for Cloud and On-Premises Azure Virtual Desktop

One theme consistently emerged throughout the preview: IT teams want a single operational experience, regardless of where their Azure Virtual Desktop session hosts run.

As Darrell Dortch, EUC Sr. Technical Consultant at AHEAD, shared after participating in the preview:

What Hydra Adds to Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid

Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid gives organizations the flexibility to extend Azure Virtual Desktop to on-premises infrastructure while preserving their existing hypervisors, hardware investments, and migration timelines. Rather than requiring organizations to replace their infrastructure, Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid enables them to modernize at their own pace.

Hydra is what makes that single operational experience real. Image management, session host lifecycle automation, monitoring, and day-two administration all run through one console and one set of workflows, whether a session host sits in Azure or on Hyper-V. Teams operate their entire Azure Virtual Desktop estate the same way instead of maintaining separate processes for cloud and on-premises, so hybrid stops being an operational compromise and becomes the practical way to run Azure Virtual Desktop at scale.

What’s Next: VMware vSphere/ESXi Support

The general availability of Hyper-V support marks the first milestone in Hydra’s broader Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid strategy. Development is already underway for VMware vSphere/ESXi support, with a private preview scheduled to begin later this month (see graphic below). As with our Hyper-V preview, we’ll work closely with customers to validate real-world deployments and incorporate feedback before making VMware support generally available.

A release like this only comes together through real effort. The customers and partners who joined the Hyper-V private preview shaped the result further, putting real deployments through their paces and telling us what held up in production and what needed more work.
