Citrix, Omnissa Horizon, Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365: Why VDI Strategy is Shifting

Despite growing pressure to modernize, enterprise IT leaders aren’t just up and abandoning their virtual desktop infrastructure, but they are asking harder questions about it more frequently, and with more urgency than ever before.

For years, platforms like Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops and Omnissa Horizon have anchored enterprise EUC strategies, providing centralized control, secure access, and operational stability at scale.

While the value these platforms deliver hasn’t changed, the economics around them have. For many enterprises, shifting licensing models and rising costs have reframed the conversation from whether to move to hybrid or cloud, to when and how.

Why the Conversation is Accelerating Right Now

While these forces are enough to push IT leaders to reconsider traditional VDI, many are still hesitant, understandably so.

The focus isn’t which platform wins; it should be how to operate across all of them without added risk or complexity by following a deliberate path: establish a baseline, identify friction points, pilot alternatives, validate the impact, then expand intentionally.
