AMD Breaks Records in VDI Scalability and Performance

Big news on the EUC front.

AMD is breaking new records in server scalability for VDI. This is more important than ever, considering the demands enterprises are facing to enable large-scale remote workforces.

Login VSI is at the forefront of measuring the capabilities of EUC solutions and has been since 2008. AMD, a long-time customer of Login VSI, recently announced some amazing new results based on their EPYC3 processor platform. AMD’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, stated, “Login VSI is the industry-standard virtual desktop load testing tool.” That said, we’ve certainly witnessed our share of records broken in the EUC world. We see this in technologies such as flash-based storage (SSD and NVRAM), Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI), and now next-generation processor platforms.

With Pat Gelsinger, VMware’s former CEO, move to Intel, we believe the market is set for an arms race to deliver increasing performance on VDI. More compute in a smaller scale effectively means less cost per user, and these companies are constantly pushing the envelope.

For those not familiar with Login VSI and our method of benchmarking VDI performance, I think Dr. Su did an excellent job explaining why this type of testing is so important. Dr. Su stated, “as the number of remote workers increases, businesses need to have the ability to scale their VDI infrastructure to support a larger number of users while maintaining low-latency to ensure a good user experience.”

Dr. Su goes on to explain how Login VSI makes this happen by saying, “[Login VSI] simulates the typical workload of a business user. The benchmark adds active VDI sessions to the server and as the number of users goes up, the average response time, the latency, also increases. And the server continues to add sessions until it’s fully saturated and can no longer add more users and still deliver a smooth user experience.”

Login Enterprise is designed with one thing in mind – the end-user experience. Simply put, first we understand what a particular end-user persona looks like and build a workflow that emulates this type of work. The testing AMD performs on their platforms uses our industry-standard Knowledge Worker workflow that includes many productivity applications used in the enterprise.

We then simulate that persona either at scale (as in the case of this benchmark), or we perform testing to determine application compatibility or continuously test as an extension to a production monitoring operation. It’s about staying on top of what it takes to deliver the best end-user experience while maximizing productivity. There’s simply nothing like it.
