UK Transport Authority
April 28, 2023
With an eye toward the future, this UK transport authority, which employs 28,000 staff and provides 31 million journeys daily, recognized it was time to upgrade its virtual desktop system.
Its IT team deliberated on the fate of its current Citrix XenApp server-based computing environment and how it could efficiently transition to a new virtual desktop infrastructure utilizing Citrix Virtual Desktops. They also planned a Windows 10 upgrade to improve user satisfaction.
To ensure the success of the project, the organization deployed Login Enterprise to benchmark user density and experience prior to roll-out and identify potential risks.
Avoid disaster
With a proactive mindset, the team approached the upgrade project cautiously, recognizing the importance of working with Login Enterprise to assess potential impacts on performance and the end-user experience before making any decisions.
Almost immediately, they noticed a significant decrease in user density. As testing continued with a combination of internal and external access via NetScaler, the team observed even more pronounced drops in density, ranging from 30 to 40 percent.
Upon receiving alarming results, the team was taken aback and concerned about the possible negative effects of upgrading their environment. The Login VSI team collaborated with the IT team to validate the Login Enterprise findings, and independent testing and evaluation were conducted according to the Transport Authority’s established protocol. The results were conclusive: the organization would likely encounter significant performance and density problems if it moved forward.
Course-correct
After avoiding critical system issues that could have affected tens of thousands of employees and citizens, the Transport Authority team is now in the planning phase, leveraging Login Enterprise to chart their course for upgrading their systems.
